“As amazing as that was, you do know you can talk to me too, right?”
The calloused fingers that were just trailing down my arm stop for a beat before they move again.
“I know,” Dukes replies after a beat of silence.
I’m lying in what has quickly become one of my very favorite places. Naked in bed with Duke Nash. We’ve been laying here quietly for the last ten minutes. Both us spent, waiting for our breathing to return to normal. I don’t say anything else, waiting to see if he’ll open up to me. I know that’s not who we are, but I can’t help but hope he does.
When I saw him standing in the girls’ room earlier tonight, I was taken aback by how tense he was. Before he turned to look at me, I’d convinced myself he was tense because of something I'd said or done. One look at me and his eyes relaxed for a moment, just before they flooded with heat. Whatever was on his mind, it wasn’t going to stop him from wanting me. Right now, that’s pretty much all that matters to me.
I can’t explain how that makes me feel. I know that I’m probably clinging to this... fling with Duke because I’m addicted to the high I get when I see that flame of desire that lights his face when he wants me. I know we don’t have anything outside of the bedroom, or kitchen table in our case, but that isn’t going to stop me from craving him. This connection we have.
My head rests on his broad chest, fingers tracing the script tattooed on his right pec. He draws in a deep breath before he speaks.
“I had a few drinks with one of the guys I served with. You remember I mentioned Hayden? The guy who made Pop’s crib?” He must feel my head nod against his chest because he carries on without me answering verbally. “He was telling me about some shit that’s been going on back in Arizona.” My head lifts to look at his face as he speaks, worry creasing my brow.
“Is everything okay? Do you need to go back?” Please say no.
“I hope not.” His small smile is sad and nothing to ease the worry I feel. Duke’s arms tighten around me, and he pulls me up his body until I'm close enough for him to kiss.
Warm lips press against mine. Despite being utterly spent a few minutes ago, this kiss is enough to have certain parts of me waking up again.
“Thank you for earlier. You did a spectacular job of keeping my mind off that shit.” My cheeks heat at his word, and I drop my head to rest against his chin as we both chuckle softly.
“Any time you need me, Duke, I’ll be here.” The sigh that he releases sounds sad when I whisper those words. Refusing to burst this sated bubble we’re in, I choose to ignore the sadness. Instead, I bring up something else that has been bugging me the last two days.
